Mountain-Bay Trail is a Wisconsin State owned trail that runs through Shawano, Marathon and Brown Counties from Green Bay to Wausau. (Green Bay is about 50 miles east of “RiverWood Farm” and Wausau is about 50 miles west of “RiverWood Farm.”) It is our longest trail encompassing 83 miles of biking fun, and it is named after Green Bay and Rib Mountain. There are stopping stations along the way such as this one at the landfill near Hatley and Ringle, Wisconsin. At various stops there is free parking, a shelter, and informative signs about the trail.

Hayman Falls (about 6 ½ miles from “RiverWood Farm”) is a lovely country park near the little town of Pella, population 875. Years ago, it housed a hydroelectric dam that has been removed. It is much loved for its huge granite boulders and idyllic pathways. Its onsite facilities include a drinking fountain, restrooms and marked trails.

For those who enjoy Canoeing, Kayaking, and Jon Boating, the “Embarrass River” offers stretches of river that are navigable. Unlike “Hayman Falls” that has many boulders, the river from Pella Park “Old Mill Park” to “RiverWood Farm” offers an enjoyable trip through secluded farmlands. There is free parking at “Old Mill Park” and a boat launch area for the small river boating craft. (“RiverWood Farm” is about 5 miles from Pella.)

The Shawano, Marion, and Caroline, Wisconsin area is home to the Amish who practice the plain lifestyle where they get around by horse and buggy. The Amish enjoy farming, construction, carpentering, building furniture, selling garden plants, bulk food sales and the bent and dent stores. The secret is to buy furniture etc. locally and cut the cost incurred by the middleman. Country Corner Sales, 105 Quarterline Rd, Marion, WI 54950, is one of their interesting places to purchase bulk foods like chocolate covered nuts, flours of all kinds, household items, small wood crafts, and furniture such as bookcases and a dining room table and chairs. (10 miles from “RiverWood Farm.”)
